Category:Literary genres

From ArticleWorld

A literary genre, like genres in other arts, is a set of conventions and tropes of theme, character, or writing style. Readers familiar with a genre will need no explanation for plot devices used that might not ring true to other readers, such as the role of disguise in Shakespeare's plays. Genres can be defined by format (essay), setting (science fiction), or mood (romantic comedy), but these limits are sensed, rather than laid down firmly. Genres are only as rigid as the person writing in them.
