Pandemics are epidemics spreading worldwide or through a large area. The World Health Organization is the institution monitoring pandemics. Three conditions must be met for a disease to be classified as a pandemic:
- A new disease threatens a population.
- Humans are affected by the agent.
- The agent spreads quicly among humans.
Pandemics do not cover all diseases affecting humans. The agent needs to be highly infectious and only then the situation becomes official. The bird flu is the current threat and is closely monitored.
