Pearls are hard, round objects that are produced primarily by the oyster a member of the group of animals called mollusks. The production of pearls in oysters is initiated by an irritating object being present within the shells. This causes layers of calcium carbonate to be deposited in a mineral form. Pearls are used in jewelry as well as in cosmetics and paints.
