China Telecom Corporation Limited is a leading provider of wired telecommunications lines in China. The joint stock limited company was formed in 2002 in accordance with the PRC Company Law. This corporation provides voice, data, telecommunications, multimedia and information services in as many as 20 municipalities, provinces and autonomous areas of China.

The number of subscribers that China Telecom has is in excess of 200 million. The H shares and American Depository Shares (ADS) of China Telecom are listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the New York Stock Exchange.

China Telecom’s Network

The network of China Telecom consists of customer premise network, access network and core network. The first type of network has all of equipment between the customer and the access network. An example of this would be a telephone and a local area network (LAN). The core network forms the backbone of the telecom network. The core consists of the domestic backbone network and the metropolitan area network. The access network has a series of transport entities and forms the connection between the core network and the customer premise network.

The network of China Telecom comprises of transport networks, services networks and the application layer. The transport networks provide transport functions of voice and data signals for service networks existing in the upper layer. The service networks as set up by this corporation include the PSTN network, non-IP data networks, IP networks and other service networks.

There are several support networks in addition to the above mentioned networks, like the signaling network, the digital synchronous network and the network management system.

Research and development at China Telecom

China Telecom spends on research and development to ensure the development of existing technology and to bring to its customers new applications and services as well. Research and development mainly focuses on fiber optic transmission technology, mobile communication, broadband access and service support systems. The organization has three research centers to pursue its research and development aims.
