Dave Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on January 9, 1967. When he was two, his devout Quaker family moved to Westchester County, New York. His father, a physicist, worked for IBM. He died in 1977 of brain cancer. Matthews took piano lessons as a child and began playing guitar when he was nine. In 1980, his family moved back to South Africa. He moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in 1986. he still lives there with his wife and two daughters, Stella Busina and Grace Anne.

Forming the band

In 1990, while working as a bartender, Matthews came up with the idea to form his own band. He originally just wanted to write songs but ended up as lead vocal. In 1991 Matthews, Boyd Tinsley, Leroi Moore, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard and Peter Greisar formed the Dave Matthews Band (DMB). The band released their first album in 1993 entitled Remember Two Things which he dedicated to his sister who died in a domestic dispute in South Africa. They followed up in 1994 with Recently and Under the Table and Dreaming.

Solo

Matthews helped to found ATO Records in 2000 with his band manager, Coran Capshaw. In the '90's, Dave has been a guest performer at many Rolling Stones concerts. In 2003, he released a solo album entitled Some Devil on which was a single, Gravedigger, which garnered him a Grammy Award in 2004. In addition, Dave Matthews have been a director for Farm Aid.
