Exposé (Mac OS X)

From ArticleWorld

Expose is a desktop applications that allows the user to see all open windows at once.It was introduced on Apple's Mac OS X and is seen as a very powerful and intuitive tool. Expose allows the user to switch to another window instantly, without having to navigate through a big list of windows or bringing all up all windows in order to find the right one.

Operation

  • Expose can show all open and unhidden windows, an operation that is activated pressing the F9 key. All the windows are shrunken, so that they can all fit on the screen.
  • Expose can show all open and unhidden windows that belong to the current active application. It is especially useful when the user wants to navigate through all the windows of different applications, as he can cycle between the running applications using the Tab key. This function is bound to the F10 key by default.
  • Expose can instantly hide all the windows, a function bound to the F10 key by default.

In either of the two cases, the user can choose the window he wants to switch too by clicking it, or using the keyboard. All functions can be remapped to other keys or even mouse buttons on systems that have a multiple-button mouse.

Other implementations

Expose has been cloned to other platforms as well. Microsoft Windows clones include TopDesk, Exposer and iEx, but alternatives for X Window System exist as well, including Kompose and Skippy.
