Filk music has been around since the 1970s and has been popular enough to warrant the winning of awards and to make it into an event at each of the respective conventions. The number to this event have been growing it is themed on the topics within the Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions.

Defining
Filk music is among the most difficult to define as it encompasses so many areas of topics. It is more of a free style that is based on the art and the concepts displayed in the Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions that present it. It is such an open style that it is performed by the convention goers and is more of a non professional style of music and is reflective of all the other genres rolled within one.
Cultural Impact
Filking is a style of music that is truly unique as it has no actual defined style and can be presented in a variety of means. It has been the brain child of numerous, but these people were given the concept by Robert Lynn Asprin during the 1974 World Science Fiction Convention.
This style has evolved since then and the major influxes of style are based on the new material involved in the respective areas of focus.
In a name
Filking was actually a mistype back in the 1950’s that was embraced in the creation of this subgenre. The word was meant to be Folk, instead it was Filk.
Outlook
This subgenre has been developing over the course of three decades and has shown no sign of slowing down. If anything it has shown that it is gaining popularity. This style of music will endure anything as long as there are fans to the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres. This is a style that is based on the areas of literature, computer games, movies, and the conceptual art that is in these two areas of interest.
