The name Foo Fighters is based on a mysterious aerial phenomena that was termed in World War II. The name has been used by the band since it was determined as the name.

Dave Grohl has mentioned that the band is a form of after the grunge days with Nirvana. Foo Fighters are more geared to rock and have proven that they are not an offshoot of the popularity of Nirvana. They have taken a different path and have proven their worth.
