Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the fourth in a series of seven novels about a young wizard, Harry Potter, written by British author JK Rowling. This novel follows Harry Potter in his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was published in 2000 and a film of the same name was released in 2005. In 2001, the novel won a Hugo Award. “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” is also the first in the series to have a character die in the action of the story.

The Dark Mark

In the beginning of the story, Harry is attending the Quidditch World Cup with the Weasleys. During the tournament, Death Eaters attack some Muggles (non-wizards) and the Dark Mark appears in the sky. The Dark Mark is Lord Voldemort's sign to his followers, the Death Eaters, that he has returned. The Death Eaters scatter.

Tri-Wizard Tournament

Three competing wizarding schools compete in a tournament that challenges the participants to three dangerous, and possibly deadly, tasks. Students who are interested put their names into a goblet. Harry and everyone else is surprised when his name is chosen from the goblet because he is too young to participate. He is forced to participate, as a fourth, competitor when it has been determined that he did not cheat to enter. The first task the participants face is a dragon. They must collect a golden egg from the dragon without being killed and before the others complete the task. Harry completes the task and his friend fear the danger he is in. The golden egg provides the clue to the second task and each participant must figure it our before the second event begins. The competitors find out that the second task is difficult when they are informed that their friends have been taken and given to the mer-people. They must try to save them before their friends die. Harry rescued two of the hostages and was commended. The thirds task is a maze filled with dangerous creatures and magical spells. They must run through and grab the trophy to win the tournament. At the end of the novel, Lord Voldemort and his followers reappear and attempt to kill Harry but end up killing his Tri-Wizard partner instead.
