Henry Rollins

Henry Rollins was born in Washington, D.C. in 1961. He was raised by his mother, Iris, when his parents divorced. He spent his early years going to military schools and attributes this to his strong sense of discipline.

Music, the beginning

Rollins got involved in the punk scene through his close friend Ian MacKaye’s influences. He worked at a number of places and bands. His strong work ethics made it possible for him to release his first E.P.

In 1981, his friend Mitch Parker gave him a copy of a Black Flag album which made Rollins a huge fan of theirs. He began corresponding with them and went to as many of their concerts as possible. During one of the concerts, Dez Cadena was changing from vocalist to guitar player. They encouraged Rollins to perform with them and with their support he did and was an easy front man in their eyes.

Black flag tour

Rollins toured with Black Flag from 1981 through 1986 when the band broke up. During this time Rollins began to write more and more of their music and became the backing force of the band. During this time Rollins had been keeping a diary and later had it published. This would be the start of a whole batch of books that he would begin to write and have published.

Rollins Band

When the Black Flag band ended, Rollins quickly formed his own band, The Rollins Band. This was the band that he would keep to this day. They would release a who variety of music that was written by Rollins and would be his means of expressing his inner thoughts and ambitions.

Tours as a speaker

In the final years of Black Flag, Rollins began touring as a spoken artist. He would give his impressions of social topics and recounted his own experiences this with his blend of self-depreciating humor and the ability to convey material in a serious topic made him even more popular.
