How to act like a true machiavellian prince

Machiavellian’s The Prince presents very clear principles on how to get and retain power. Yet, it must be said that there were historically, social and political reasoning behind Machiavellian approaches and not just greed or avariceness. To Machiavellian gaining power for The Prince would mean stability for his country which was important to him. That said, here are a few steps that should help you be more Machiavellian. How you choose to use your power, if or when you get it, is all up to you.

  1. First buy a copy of Machiavelli’s The Prince. Why not learn how to gain power from the original source. Also purchase a copy of Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War.”
  2. Second, death is inevitable so live in the now. It is important to understand that you will die but concentrate on the things you can control.
  3. Third, be the kind of person that is constantly aware of what is going on around them.
  4. Fourth, know that money is only one way to gain power. Power is more subtle then that and comes in many forms. That said, acquire as much money as possible.
  5. Five, be the kind of person that draws people to you and keeps them there. To have people loyal to you is a good thing, but you must honor their loyalty. If you use it against them you will be an ineffective leader.
  6. Six, be aware of your power but humble about it when necessary. Those who are truly powerful do not make others aware of it all the time, there is no need.
  7. Seven, keep your own consul which mean do not share all your thoughts with anyone.
  8. Eight, know your friends from your enemies. Never mix the two and never treat one as you would the other.
  9. Nine, they say it is more important to be feared then loved. What is true? When you have power you must not be afraid to lose the love of others, to do what is necessary.
  10. Ten, note other people’s weaknesses for future references.

Morals

Most people think that to be Machiavellian means to have no morals. They could not be more wrong. Not everything can be categorized in black and white, there are grays. To know as well as to be true to yourself takes hard work, but what is even harder is trying to do the right thing especially when you are responsible for other people. Lastly, know that things will not always go as you expect, and be honorable.
