How to encourage your children to be more creative

From ArticleWorld

To encourage your children to be more creative you can help them to perceive things in a new way, to uncover hitherto unknown problems and to come up with untried but effective solutions to those problems. By inspiring them to be more creative you improve their ability to solve problems that are worth solving and also give them the ability to create knowledge. All children by nature are curious and have the seeds of creativity imbedded deep within their brains. As parents you need to awaken this curiosity and allow the seed of creativity to take root in your children’s brains. Here are some guidelines to help you.

A few suggestions

  1. Create an environment around your house that triggers creativity in your children. Let them read books, experiment with materials and books and encourage your children to question all experimental results.
  2. Encourage your children to experiment with the new and the unusual. Let them discover the whys and the wherefores. Question your children about their new discoveries and even question their results. Appreciate their efforts and egg them on.
  3. Become involved in their activities and ask them questions beginning ‘how would you-’ and ‘what would you do if-’
  4. Tell your child about different cultures, religions, traditions and expose him/ her to different countries without being disparaging about nations less fortunate than yours. Help them to keep an open mind and form their own ideas without bias.

Do’s

  • Encourage your children to what they like to do best.
  • Give them a diary or a notebook to jot down their thought processes, new discoveries and their answers.

Don’ts

  • Don’t pooh-pooh children’s thought processes and the erroneous results that they arrive at. They have formed an opinion based on their observations, help them reconstruct their observations but do not discourage them by laughing or negating their answers.
