How to install RAM cards to your computer

The RAM (Random Access Memory) is a very important part of the computer. The more RAM a computer has, the more memory programs have at their disposal, and therefore, the performance is better. Here is how to install the RAM cards into your computer:

Steps

  1. Open the computer's case. You can usually do this by simply removing the screws that hold the side panel.
  2. Locate the RAM slots on the mainboard. Their location is usually shown in the motherboard's manual. If not, you can simply look at the card your are holding in your hand: there is surely another one inside the computer. Find it and look at the slot in which it is inserted. The RAM slots are normally adjacent, so it should be easy to find a free one.
  3. Push the clamps to release the old memory if you want to change it and insert the new one, or...
  4. ...find an empty slot and insert the new memory card in it.
  5. If you look on the motherboard, you will see that each memory slot has a notch. Line the notch on the motherboard with the one on the new memory card.
  6. Gently press on the card, until the clamps are completely closed. Do not close the computer's case for now.
  7. Turn on the computer. If it boots correctly, you can safely close the case.

Notes

If the computer does not boot correctly, you should hear one or more beeps. One beep means that you installed an incorrect type of memory, or your did not install it correctly. Refer to your motherboard's documentation if you hear more than one beep.
