How to install an ATX power supply unit

From ArticleWorld

You will sometimes have to install an ATX power supply into a computer, especially if you use older hardware. Here is how to do it.

Steps

  1. Unplug the computer from the main current supply. You may get an electric shock if you do not do this.
  2. Unscrew the side panel of the computer's case and remove it. Take a good look at how its power supply is inserted, then unplug all the connections to hardware.
  3. Remove the screws that keep the power supply in the case. Remove it gently.
  4. Insert the new power supply and put the screws back. Make sure it does not move, as it will be subject of some vibrations. Do not put the side panel back for now.
  5. Reconnect all hardware to the PSU and plug the PSU in. Turn the computer on and make sure it works correctly
  6. After you are sure that the computer works correctly, turn it off and put the side panel back to its place.

Notes

If a component is obstruction your way to the power supply, simply remove it. It is better to have four more screws to put back before testing than damaging your hardware.

Sometimes, the power supply may be held with a few tie straps. It is safe to cut them, but look at them very careful. Cut a cable only if it is obviously a tie strap and not a power or data cable.
