How to spin without a jump

From ArticleWorld

Spinning without jumping is a cool trick to master, though it is not a beginner’s trick, and you should only attempt it if you are already good at ice skating. The two methods shown here for spinning are quite simple, but a great deal of practice is necessary to make this an impressive move.

First method

  1. Begin by skating slowly, though not to a stop, and have a good handful of metres of ice in front of you.
  2. Swing your leg from the side (you can choose which leg). This will make you spin quickly. Keep the other leg still (or straight, at least).
  3. Put the tip of your skate on the ice to stop.

Second method

  1. Stand still, with feet apart. With one toe pick on the ice, bend the other leg at the knee, and turn around the toe that is touching the ice.
  2. When you have gained enough momentum, bring your feet together. You should have enough speed to spin around.

Hints

  • Remember your arms. Holding your arms out will slow down your momentum. You should tuck them as closely as you can into your body, as this will give you more speed.
  • You will certainly fall. You will probably fall quite a lot, to begin with. Don’t let this worry you. Falls are common in ice skating, especially while performing tricks like this.
  • You can never practice enough. If you want to become good at something like ice-skating, you have to put the hours in. There is no other way.
  • Take care.
