From ArticleWorld

Indian pop music is one of the most popular and widely accepted present day music forms. It is a combination of the foot tapping western beats with the melodious and sweet Indian classical or folk forms, creating a new meaning to music, also being called as Hindi- pop or Indi-pop.

The beginning

Pop music was quite dormant till the late seventies but with the introduction of songs by the very talented “Queen of Indo-pop”, Nazia Hussan, Indian pop music had started to gain wider acceptance. Some of the other founders of Indian pop are Biddu, Bappi Lahiri and Sharon Prabhakar. In 1984, Nazia along with brother Zohaib introduced a Hindi-pop album which was an instant hit across India as well as the Hindi speaking world.

Hindi-pop songs can be heard nowadays quite commonly either in films or private albums. In the early nineties, Alisha Chinoy, a very popular artist of India had come forward and the songs that she sung were being dubbed as Indi-pop. Other artists and singers who followed her footsteps were beg names like Rageshwari, Shan, Bombay Vikings, Sunidhi Chauhan, Colonial Cousins, Asha Bhonsle and many more. Recently some new faces too have turned up like Bally Sagoo, Daler Mahendi & Rishi Rich to name a few.

Global appeal

The global appeal of this kind of music is evident from the fact that music like Punjabi, Indian film and pop songs are being added into the songs of the western artists. Quite recently Britney Spears joined with Rishi Rich, Jay-Z and Punjabi MC, Timbaland and Truth Hurts, with her song “addictive” (a song in a Hindi film sung by Lata Mangeshkar). With this kind of music, Indian-pop is winning the hearts of the world of music buffs like the Indian classical music, who spell bound the audiences of the world from the sixties.
