Jadavpur

Jadavpur is the name of a ward in the city of Kolkata (Calcutta), India. The literal meaning of the name is “Town of the Yadavs” which is a direct reference to the dairymen called yadavs who were its initial inhabitants. Jadavpur is home to the world famous Jadavpur University, where the Nobel Laureate of 1998 Amartya Sen was a faculty member.

The Jadavpur area was a marshy land that was urbanized as late as the mid 1950s. Yet, open drains and mosquitos were a big menace only until a few years back. It was a surburb of Kolkata but later came under the authority of the KMC (Kolkata Municpal Corporation).

Connections

Jadavpur is close to the main shopping areas of Gariahat and Golpark. It was regarded as a cheap residential locality close to the posh Tollygunge counterpart, and the middle class residential areas of Dhakuria and Golf Green. The Santoshpur Flyover Bridge connects Jadavpur to Santoshpur. On the sealdah railway line, Jadavpur is one of the busier local train stops. A large bus stand popular as the 8B bus stand is an important stop and Jadavpaur area is sometimes referred to simply as 8B as a result of this.

Second only to Gariahat Market and Lake Market, Jadavpur market, including the Farmer’s market, is a very busy and important market of the area. Jadavpur also has numerground playgrounds and gardens and is greener than most other parts of Kolkata.

The Jadavpur ward has several academic and research institutes, some of which are :

  • Jadavpur University
  • Indian Association for the Cultivation of Sciences (IACS), a leading research institute
  • Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI)
  • Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB)
  • National Instrument
  • Jadavpur Vidyapith, a leading school in south Kolkata

Jadavpur Coffee House

Coffee was originally promoted by two coffee houses in Kolkata, one of which is the Jadavpur Coffee House located in Jadavpur. This place is home to generations of students, political rebels and intellectuals who hang out for a cup of coffee, adda (chat sessions) and some food for thought.
