Joy Division

From ArticleWorld

Joy Division was one of the bands that emerged from the ashes of what was left of the punk genre. They started in 1977 and released a number of popular songs. The one that set the standard at the time was Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Joy Division was been labeled as depressive and dark in nature. This is due to the style of their music and the fall of Ian Curtis. Many friends of the band and the band themselves deny this.

The course

The Sex Pistols were the driving inspiration for this band and its many music releases over the short tenure. They went through a number of drummers and found one that was to stay with them through to the new band’s birth.

In 1980, Joy Division was slated to start a European tour and some of the dates had to be cancelled due to Ian’s failing health. On April 8th, at the Derby Hall, Ian grew too ill to perform. To make it worse, Ian and his wife went through a bout due to his cheating on her with a Belgian lady hew had met on tour.

On the 18th of May, 1980, Ian stayed home alone and watched Stroszek, a movie about an artist who commits suicide and listen to Iggy Pop’s album the Idiot. Then he hung himself in his kitchen only to be found by his wife the next day.

Aftermath

The band ended with Ian Officially, but the members created New Order form the ashes of Joy Division. There have been numerous books written about the band and about Ian Curtis and why he killed himself, it has been a topic of wonder and remorse. He was considered to be one of vision.

Their music is still being recreated, the most popular one as of late has been Nine Inch Nails remake of their song Dead Souls for the movie The Crow.
