Litter box

From ArticleWorld

An indoor disposal box for pets, a littler box is intended for cats, rabbits and other pets that cannot go outside to relieve themselves, but are permitted to roam the house. Also sometimes called a sandbox, it is filled with granular material that absorbs moisture and in some cases, reduces odor. For ease of cleaning, clumping litter has been developed that can be easily scooped out of the box. If desired, sand may also be used, but is generally less popular because it doesn’t clump as well or mask odors as effectively. Newspaper or a larger tray may be desired under the litter box, as cats have a tendency to toss some litter over the edge during use.

Types

Most commonly used is the plastic tray. This simple design consists of a plastic tray, litter, and in some cases, a liner to make emptying easier. Liners are put in the box before filling with litter, then removed, tied at the ends, and discarded. More elaborate models may have a cover to help control odor and make it less unsightly. Some may consist of two trays, one having holes to sift the clean litter through, separating the clumps for disposal. New technology in litter boxes have made automated litter boxes available. Motion sensors detect the cat leaving the box and trigger electronically controlled combs to rake the clumps into an enclosed receptacle.
