Muzsikás

Muzsikás is the name of a highly popular Hungarian band. Its repertoire shows mainly folk music but not only Hungarian folk music but also folk tunes taken from different countries and adapted to fit the people’s tastes.

History

Muzsikás was formed in 1973 and it quickly rose to success. Although folk was the main genre it played it also featured several performances signed by classical composers. The most notable one is considered to be Béla Bartók, a composer that was also involved in collecting folk songs.

1993 was a very important year for Hungarian music because of a song recorded and released by Muzsikás. The track Máramaros - The Lost Jewish Music of Transylvania, brought back music that was thought lost in the Holocaust. Since 1978 the band has released several albums and went on many tours in countries around the world.

Members and collaborations

The band’s members are:

  • Mihály Sipos – violin and citera
  • László Porteleki – vocal, violin and koboz
  • Péter Éri - viola, mandolin, long or normal flute and kontra
  • Dániel Hamar – drums, gardon and contrabass

Muzsikás also featured several performances with invited guests, notable in Hungarian music. The most prolific collaboration showed the band perform with Márta Sebestyén. Several other artists and bands have featured on albums signed Muzsikás.
