Characteristics

It is characterized by its radio-friendly style, distorted but often simple guitar riffs, and "soft verse, loud chorus" song patterning. It is one of the main styles that has become a popular style in the United States mainstream.

Implications

In its broadest sense, post-grunge refers to any band that has been influenced by the original grunge sound. As such it encompasses a wide variety of styles and can be used to describe bands ranging from Sugar Ray and Cake to Godsmack and Filter. This makes the post-grunge a genre that overlaps multiple genres and is a genre that will either dissolve over time, or be a melding factor for the others.

Proper

However, the term is now most often used in reference to the unique pop rock music of the late nineties that was produced by bands such as Third Eye Blind and Matchbox Twenty.

Phasing out

At the turn of the millennium post-grunge began to experience a stronger resurgence as bands like Puddle of Mudd, 3 Doors Down, and Nickelback began to gain popularity.

Some of these newer bands alienated fans of the original grunge and early post-grunge sound, and are often referred to simply as alternative rock or "modern rock" rather than post-grunge.

Conclusion

With bands in both the in and the out of the post-grunge it is uncertain if post-grunge is like grunge. If it is a style that has served its purpose and is no more or if it is a style that may insight more music from more bands and has yet to run its course.
