Rasputina

From ArticleWorld

Rasputina is the creation of Melora Creager and has been her little baby since its inception in 1992. This is a Brooklyn, New York band that has spanned throughout the world performing with only cellos in the beginning and now using two cellos and a set of drums. The cellos are used as a variety of instraments and the band uses a synthesiser and a distorter to have the cellos mimic any instrament needed for a song.

Melora’s role

Melora is the heart and soul of Rasputina. She writes all the lyrics, does all the vocals, plays one of the cellos, and does much of the art on the album covers.

Rasputina’s Rise

Although Rasputina was locally well known and was gaining popularity rapidly, many didn’t know what to label them as. This was a complication as many record labels were timid with this unorthodox band and their unique style. It wasn’t until Jimmy Boyle of Columbia Records noticed them at a festival concert and got them to sign with the record label that things really took off for them.

Album I

In 1996, their first official album was released and they toured with the likes of Bob Mould, Porno for Pyros, and Marilyn Manson. It was Manson that would play a major role in their EP album as he remixed much of their music for the album.

Album II

One their second album, Rasputina signed on former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna as their drummer. He would later become their producer as well as he also introduced technology to the cello music and gave Rasputina a more diverse and even more unique style.

Current lineup

After a series of various replacements in the band, it is now comprised of Melora and Jonathon TeBeest. If there will be additional members will be seen in due time.

Style

Each member of Rasputina, past and present, has had an interest in the Victorian era, and they were always expressive with this in their clothing as the came to concerts and photo shoots in Victorian attire. Even though their music is of a darker and ethereal style and the older style of appearance, they don’t even fit into any of the goth genres.
