Salt Lake City (Bidhan Nagar), Kolkata

From ArticleWorld

Bidhan Nagar, popularly known as Salt Lake City is a district in Kolkata, India. It is a satellite township and since it has been built recently, it is quite well - planned. It was constructed to accommodate the ever increasing population of the city. It should not be confused with its namesake city in USA. It has become an IT hub and considered to be one of Kolkata’s nicer localities.

Facilities

Salt Lake is a planned area and hence offers many more facilities as compared to its older counterparts. The roads are clean and well maintained. Sanitation facilities are good. Thie area has its own swimming pool, the largest Sports Stadium in India, an amusement park, a 5 star hotel (The Hyatt Regency), modern shopping malls, a sports training center (called the Netaji Subhas Sports Institute) and a number of schools. The environment is relatively pollution free and one can see tree clad boulevards all along. The original plans included setting up administrative offices for Greater Kolkata but it was later dropped.

There are police stations, post offices, electricity offices etc. Due to poor street lighting maintenance petty thefts and eve teasing are persistent problems.

Salt Lake city houses numerous professional, academic and research institutions. Some of them are :

  • The Variable Energy Cyclotron and the Satyendra Nath Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences for research
