Sire Records Co. became a prevalent force in the music production industry in 1982 when, under the leadership of Seymour Stein, Madonna became on of their most famous clients. As a result of signing Madonna, rapper Ice T later signed with the company in 1986. Sire is primarily an Independent record label specializing in New wave music and punk artists.

Sire Records is a member of the Warner Bros. Records record producers group, and has a history of mergers and dissolutions prior to its return to being Sire Records. They were at one point part of ABC Records and then Warner Brothers. In 1995, Sire joined forces with Elektra Records, resulting in Stein’s appointment to the position of president. Three years later, Sire left Elektra but remained part of Warner Music Group. This was before the label became changed is name to London-Sire Records after a 2000 merger with U.S. company London Records. Once that merger was dissolved in 2003, the company name returned to Sire Records and they again were acquired by Warner Brothers.

The history began in 1966 with the founding of Sire Productions. Richard Gottehrer and Seymour Stein were the founding producers who took the company in the 1970s to become a large and well known label. During this time, they signed bands including the Ramones and Talking Heads.
