Yahoo! Search

From ArticleWorld

Yahoo! Search is Yahoo's web search service. In time, the term Yahoo! Search has not denoted an actual search engine of Yahoo!, but rather an interface between the Yahoo! portal and other search engines, with the most recent option being Google.

Yahoo! recently decided to start providing their own searching capabilities, creating much debate over how inspired this move was. Nevertheless, it also marked the starting point of a fervent competition in the web searching field.

Independence

In 2002, Yahoo! decided to abandon this method and obtain the actual results themselves. The first acquisition was Inktomi, a company that provides web searching services, with search results displayed on various web pages. Shortly after that, Yahoo! bought Overture Services, Inc., which was also the owner of AltaVista and AlltheWeb.

In 2004, Yahoo! Search announced that it would no longer provide Google-enabled search results. Yahoo! Search became its own information feeder, using a newly designed web crawler named Yahoo! Slurp.

This meant a boost of operations for Yahoo. The new search engine combined the power of AlltheWeb and AltaVista, both of them important players in their field. The newly obtained search results were also included in all of Yahoo's search-enabled websites, and the they also started selling the results to other companies. This was the start of a fervent competition with Google, former Yahoo! partners.
