From ArticleWorld

A hormone is a chemical message produced by a gland and transported by the blood to a cell or tissue. Hormones are secreted to achieve a specific effect. This effect varies widely and can include the stimulation or inhibition of growth or the immune system as well as the preparation of an organism for reproduction. Hormones are most often produced in response to other hormones and thus regulate the production and release of other hormones.
