From ArticleWorld

A domestic robot can be defined as a robot which is used for household chores. The evolution of the concept is closely related with the science fiction literature which invented the concept and later helped in its development. Its usage nowadays is not widespread and is limited mostly to Japan where it also benefits from a cultural support.

Classification

Depending on their complexity and autonomy level, domestic robots can be classified as low level robots if they are remote controlled and in a basic form, care robots if they are aimed for low mobility but complex operations, chore robots if they have a high mobility, autonomy and only basic operations to perform and finally domobots which have autonomy, high mobility and are able to do complex tasks within a domotic network and which are connected to it using a wireless technology. A more specific classification depending on the tasks the domestic robots can perform is this one that follows:

  • Entertainment robots (or toy robots) – examples are the famous Wakamaru (manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) or Robosapien.
  • Robotic vacuum cleaners – the robots currently in use are Roomba (from iRobot), Robo Maxx and Electrolux Trilobite.
  • Robotic lawnmowers – the brands currently in use are RoboMower (from Friendly Robotics) and Electrolux Automower
  • Robots designed for cleaning swimming pools
  • Robots designed to iron clothing – An example is Dressman from Siemens AG.
