Hunting dog

From ArticleWorld

A hunting dog is any type of dog used to assist hunters or a breed that was developed for that purpose. Hunting dogs are typically divided into for groups; hounds, gun dogs, terriers and curs. There are two types of hound dogs, the scent hound and the sight hounds. Gun dogs consist of pointers, retrievers, setters, spaniels and water dogs.

Hounds

As their names imply scent hounds track their prey by following their scent, while sight hounds follow their prey by keeping the target within sight. The most common scent hounds are the Blood hound and the Basset hound. The most common sight hounds are the Whippet and the Greyhound.

Gun dogs

Gun dogs, also called bird dogs were developed to retrieve prey such as birds and small animals. The most well known types of gun dogs are the pointers, retrievers and setters. Pointers are most often used for bird hunting. Retrievers are bred to return prey to the hunter, without causing further damage. Setters search for their prey by scent and freeze once they find it. Spaniels are a smaller breed typically used to flush prey into the open. Water dogs are used to expose and retrieve prey from the water.

Terriers and curs

Terriers were originally bred to hunt small game such as fox, badgers and otters. They are typically a smaller breed that is known to be both brave and somewhat hyperactive. The Curs are a group of dogs originated in the United States. They are typically a mixed breed developed for their hunting skills and their looks may vary widely. Because they do not have a standard appearance they are not considered show dogs.
