Roger Price popularized the Droodle form of Cartoon in the 1950s in his book entitled Droodles. The word Droodle comes from a combination of the words Doodle and Riddle.

The basic form of a Droodle is a simple picture consisting of a black square containing an abstract simple image. Below the simple drawing is a Caption giving a funny description of the drawings contents.

During the 1950s and 1960s, this form of entertainment appears in many places including as Graffiti and inclusions in newspapers. Actually, the art became so popular that a TV game show arrived with a Droodle theme.

Kent Cigarettes actually used Droodles in their advertising for a time and the album cover for Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch by Frank Zappa was a Droodle done earlier by Price.
