Toxicology is the study of bioactive chemicals that, when inhaled, ingested or absorbed into the skin, create a harmful response to a human or other living thing. Some toxic chemicals have no medicinal value whatsoever while others are safe and therapeutic at a certain smaller dose but become toxic at elevated doses. Toxicology can involve the study of environmental pollutants and how they can be minimized. Other areas of toxicology deal with venoms or toxins released by other organisms. Medical toxicology works to help improve survivability of those who are exposed to toxins.
